La masse d\u2019une \u00e9toile correspond \u00e0 la quantit\u00e9 de mati\u00e8re qu\u2019elle renferme. C\u2019est le \u00ab\u00a0carburant\u00a0\u00bb qu\u2019elle va br\u00fbler tout au long de sa vie et ainsi la faire briller. Une \u00e9toile poss\u00e8de donc une luminosit\u00e9 qui lui est propre. Elle traduit le rythme auquel ses r\u00e9serves sont d\u00e9pens\u00e9es. Finalement, le rapport entre masse et luminosit\u00e9 exprime la dur\u00e9e de vie de l\u2019\u00e9toile \u2013\u00a0plus une \u00e9toile est massive, plus elle \u00e9volue rapidement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 noter qu\u2019une \u00e9toile brille, mais ne scintille pas. Elle \u00e9met un rayonnement continu et ce sont les perturbations de notre atmosph\u00e8re terrestre qui donnent l\u2019illusion d\u2019un scintillement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019autre part, la couleur correspond \u00e0 la temp\u00e9rature externe de l\u2019astre. Elle varie du rouge, pour les \u00e9toiles les plus froides, au bleu pour les plus chaudes. En effet, comme dans la flamme d\u2019une gazini\u00e8re, la partie bleue a la temp\u00e9rature la plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On distingue bien les diff\u00e9rentes cat\u00e9gories d\u2019\u00e9toiles sur le diagramme ci-contre, o\u00f9 elles sont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es en fonction de leur luminosit\u00e9 et de leur temp\u00e9rature. Bien connu des astrophysiciens, ce diagramme dit d\u2019Hertzsprung-Russel (H-R), montre les diff\u00e9rents stades d\u2019\u00e9volution des \u00e9toiles sous forme de branches. Au cours de sa vie, une \u00e9toile passe d\u2019une branche \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Elle reste la majeure partie de sa vie sur la \u00ab\u00a0s\u00e9quence principale\u00a0\u00bb, avant de se transformer en g\u00e9ante, superg\u00e9ante ou naine blanche (voir plus loin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les pouponni\u00e8res d\u2019\u00e9toiles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Des \u00e9toiles se forment en ce moment m\u00eame dans notre Galaxie, et dans les autres galaxies de l\u2019Univers. Elles naissent en groupe, \u00e0 partir de l\u2019effondrement gravitationnel d\u2019un nuage de gaz, de mol\u00e9cules et de poussi\u00e8res. Des \u00e9toiles sont n\u00e9es. Chacune grossit ensuite en captant de la mati\u00e8re et s\u2019entoure d\u2019un disque d\u2019accr\u00e9tion. Ce sont elles qui la font briller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s l\u2019effondrement gravitationnel de la n\u00e9buleuse, la proto\u00e9toile est initialement homog\u00e8ne et se compose d&rsquo;environ 70\u00a0% d&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne et 28\u00a0% d&rsquo;h\u00e9lium, plus de faibles traces d\u2019autres \u00e9l\u00e9ments. Au centre de l\u2019\u00e9toile, les conditions de pression et de temp\u00e9rature sont extr\u00eames. Alors, quand la temp\u00e9rature atteint 10\u00a0millions de degr\u00e9s, le processus de fusion nucl\u00e9aire commence \u00e0 transformer l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne en h\u00e9lium dans le c\u0153ur. Pr\u00e8s de 90\u00a0 des \u00e9toiles du cosmos brillent ainsi en br\u00fblant leur hydrog\u00e8ne. En effet, comme les \u00e9toiles sont compos\u00e9es majoritairement de ce gaz, elles disposent d&rsquo;une grande quantit\u00e9 de carburant. C\u2019est pourquoi les \u00e9toiles passent la plus grande partie de leur existence dans cette phase de fusion de l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne, qui correspond \u00e0 la s\u00e9quence principale du diagramme H-R.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De plus, la structure de l\u2019astre r\u00e9sulte du d\u00e9licat \u00e9quilibre qui s\u2019instaure entre deux forces oppos\u00e9es. D\u2019une part, la pression interne provient de la chaleur d\u00e9gag\u00e9e par les r\u00e9actions nucl\u00e9aires et tend \u00e0 dilater l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00e9toile. L\u2019\u00e9toile devient alors une g\u00e9ante rouge et change donc de branche dans le diagramme H-R. La temp\u00e9rature du noyau monte jusqu\u2019\u00e0 100&nbsp;millions de degr\u00e9s et c\u2019est la fusion de l\u2019h\u00e9lium en carbone et en oxyg\u00e8ne qui d\u00e9marre. Ce stade de g\u00e9ante rouge est bref&nbsp;: par exemple, le Soleil ne devrait rester que 130&nbsp;millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es dans cet \u00e9tat, contre 10&nbsp;milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es \u00e0 fusionner l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9toile, devenue instable et variable, souffle ensuite litt\u00e9ralement son atmosph\u00e8re dans l\u2019espace. C\u2019est le stade dit de la n\u00e9buleuse plan\u00e9taire (appel\u00e9e ainsi car les premiers objets de ce type d\u00e9couverts ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confondus avec des plan\u00e8tes). Au centre, un c\u0153ur incandescent subsiste, la naine blanche. Cet astre d\u2019une taille similaire \u00e0 la Terre mais de la masse du Soleil, est caract\u00e9ris\u00e9 par son \u00e9norme de densit\u00e9 d\u2019une tonne par centim\u00e8tre-cube. Une cuill\u00e8re \u00e0 caf\u00e9 d\u2019une telle substance p\u00e8serait autant\u2026 qu\u2019une voiture sur Terre&nbsp;! Or, si la masse de la naine blanche d\u00e9passe 1,44&nbsp;fois celle du Soleil, elle s\u2019effondre sous l\u2019effet de son propre poids. Sinon, elle luit pendant des milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es avant de s\u2019\u00e9teindre\u2026 en naine noire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le destin d\u2019une \u00e9toile d\u00e9pend de sa masse. Rector<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Les \u00e9toiles de moins d\u2019une demi-masse solaire, elles, d\u00e9clinent en simple naine blanche enrichie en h\u00e9lium. \u00c0 noter qu\u2019il existe aussi des naines jaunes et rouges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Et les \u00e9toiles massives&nbsp;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Les \u00e9toiles dont la masse est comprise entre 8 et 25 masses solaires \u00e9voluent rapidement en g\u00e9ante bleue, puis en superg\u00e9ante rouge. Pendant cette phase, la fusion des \u00e9l\u00e9ments chimiques se poursuit par \u00e9tapes jusqu\u2019\u00e0 synth\u00e9tiser le silicium et le fer. L\u2019astre pr\u00e9sente alors une structure en pelure d\u2019oignon. Le fer est au centre, surmont\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments de plus en plus l\u00e9gers, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9lium et l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&rsquo;ensemble des r\u00e9actions nucl\u00e9aires qui se produisent \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des \u00e9toiles est appel\u00e9&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/sommes-nous-vraiment-des-poussieres-d-etoiles\/\">nucl\u00e9osynth\u00e8se stellaire<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, le fer est l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment le plus stable de la nature. Sa fusion pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des noyaux plus gros et complexes comme le plomb ou l\u2019uranium consomme donc de l\u2019\u00e9nergie au lieu d\u2019en produire. Une fois le c\u0153ur de fer form\u00e9, la pression de radiation n\u2019est donc plus suffisante pour compenser la gravitation, et le c\u0153ur de l\u2019\u00e9toile s\u2019effondre sur lui-m\u00eame. L&rsquo;\u00e9nergie d\u00e9gag\u00e9e par les couches int\u00e9rieures de l\u2019\u00e9toile &#8211;&nbsp;pelures d\u2019oignon&nbsp;&#8211; tombant vers le centre cr\u00e9e alors une onde de choc qui souffle les couches ext\u00e9rieures en une violente et spectaculaire explosion&nbsp;: la fameuse supernova. Pendant quelques jours, elle brille davantage que la galaxie qui l\u2019h\u00e9berge&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais que reste-il apr\u00e8s la supernova&nbsp;? D\u2019abord, une structure filamentaire appel\u00e9e n\u00e9buleuse d\u2019\u00e9mission, qui \u00e9voque de la dentelle et se constitue des restes de mati\u00e8re issus de la violente explosion de l\u2019\u00e9toile. Pour une \u00e9toile de masse initiale comprise entre 8 et 25&nbsp;masses solaires, il se forme au centre de cette n\u00e9buleuse une \u00e9toile \u00e0 neutrons, constitu\u00e9e uniquement de neutrons agglutin\u00e9s, de typiquement 10&nbsp;kilom\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre. Elle pr\u00e9sente la densit\u00e9 inou\u00efe d\u2019un milliard de tonnes par centim\u00e8tre-cube. Cette fois-ci, une cuill\u00e8re \u00e0 caf\u00e9 de sa substance p\u00e8serait autant&#8230; qu\u2019une montagne sur notre plan\u00e8te.
