Situ\u00e9e dans le top&nbsp;15 des \u00e9toiles les plus brillantes du ciel, elle appartient \u00e0 la constellation d\u2019Orion. Elle y est la deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9toile la plus \u00e9clatante apr\u00e8s Rigel. Mais au dernier trimestre&nbsp;2019, sa luminosit\u00e9 a diminu\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re surprenante. Plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment, B\u00e9telgeuse fait partie des \u00e9toiles pulsantes (la majorit\u00e9 des \u00e9toiles variables), ce qui signifie que son volume change de mani\u00e8re p\u00e9riodique. Elle gonfle et r\u00e9tr\u00e9cit en fonction de la quantit\u00e9 plus ou moins importante de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-etoiles-naissance-vie-et-mort\/\">chaleur \u00e9mise en son c\u0153ur<\/a> et emprisonn\u00e9e par son atmosph\u00e8re. Kervella<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>La luminosit\u00e9 de B\u00e9telgeuse observ\u00e9e depuis la Terre oscille habituellement entre 0,2 (environ celle de Rigel) et 1 de magnitude apparente. Elle varie de mani\u00e8re semi-r\u00e9guli\u00e8re selon trois p\u00e9riodes diff\u00e9rentes&nbsp;: tous les 425 jours, tous les 100 \u00e0 180&nbsp;jours, et tous les 5,9&nbsp;ans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En octobre&nbsp;2019, B\u00e9telgeuse brillait \u00e0 une magnitude d&rsquo;environ&nbsp;0,5. Mais au mois de d\u00e9cembre, amateurs et professionnels ont observ\u00e9 une forte chute de luminosit\u00e9, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 1,5 en toute fin d&rsquo;ann\u00e9e&nbsp;! En seulement deux mois, B\u00e9telgeuse est donc pass\u00e9e de huiti\u00e8me \u00e9toile la plus brillante du ciel nocturne \u00e0&#8230; vingt-troisi\u00e8me. Or, \u00e2g\u00e9e de 8 \u00e0 9 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, B\u00e9telgeuse est effectivement en fin de vie&nbsp;! Alors, l&rsquo;\u00e9toile va-t-elle exploser&nbsp;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sa masse \u00e9tant d&rsquo;environ 15&nbsp;masses solaires, elle a rapidement \u00e9volu\u00e9 en superg\u00e9ante rouge, son \u00e9tat actuel. Depuis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-etoiles-naissance-vie-et-mort\/\">la combustion des \u00e9l\u00e9ments chimiques se poursuit en son sein<\/a>, par \u00e9tapes, ce qui lui conf\u00e8re au fur et \u00e0 mesure une structure en \u00ab\u00a0pelure d\u2019oignon\u00a0\u00bb. Sa fusion pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des noyaux plus gros et complexes comme le plomb ou l\u2019uranium consomme donc de l\u2019\u00e9nergie au lieu d\u2019en produire. Une fois le c\u0153ur de fer form\u00e9, la pression de radiation n\u2019est donc en th\u00e9orie plus suffisante pour compenser la gravitation, et le c\u0153ur de l\u2019\u00e9toile s\u2019effondre alors sur lui-m\u00eame. L\u2019\u00e9nergie d\u00e9gag\u00e9e par les couches int\u00e9rieures de l\u2019\u00e9toile \u2013&nbsp;pelures d\u2019oignon&nbsp;\u2013 tombant vers le centre cr\u00e9e une onde de choc qui souffle les couches ext\u00e9rieures en une violente et spectaculaire explosion&nbsp;: la fameuse supernova. Un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne tr\u00e8s rare, qui selon les astrophysiciens ne se produit pas plus de trois fois par si\u00e8cle dans notre galaxie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B\u00e9telgeuse doit donc exploser en une supernova de type&nbsp;II, qui sera visible depuis la Terre m\u00eame en pleine journ\u00e9e et ce pendant plusieurs jours, avant de devenir une <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-etoiles-naissance-vie-et-mort\/\">\u00e9toile \u00e0 neutrons<\/a>. Mais quand&nbsp;? D&rsquo;apr\u00e8s les sp\u00e9cialistes, ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne devrait se produire entre maintenant&#8230; et d&rsquo;ici environ 100&nbsp;000&nbsp;ans&nbsp;! Par exemple, l\u2019\u00e9toile \u00e9jecte tr\u00e8s r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement du gaz sous forme de vent stellaire. Or, il se peut que ce gaz se soit condens\u00e9 en poussi\u00e8re. Ce sont alors ces petits grains de mati\u00e8re solide qui auraient absorb\u00e9 la lumi\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00e9toile dans les longueurs d\u2019onde du visible. D&rsquo;o\u00f9 la baisse d&rsquo;\u00e9clat significative observ\u00e9e depuis la Terre. Toutefois, les scientifiques notent que dans le domaine des longueurs d&rsquo;ondes en infrarouge, la quantit\u00e9 de lumi\u00e8re re\u00e7ue par les t\u00e9lescopes n&rsquo;a pas diminu\u00e9&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, une autre explication plausible est tout simplement due aux diff\u00e9rentes p\u00e9riodes de variabilit\u00e9 de B\u00e9telgeuse. Selon la revue <em>Astronomical Telegram<\/em>, la faible luminosit\u00e9 \u00e9tait due \u00e0 la co\u00efncidence entre le minimum de luminosit\u00e9 de B\u00e9telgeuse selon son cycle de 5,9&nbsp;ans, et un minimum plus marqu\u00e9 que la normale selon son cycle de 425&nbsp;jours. La concordance de ces deux minimums aurait alors cr\u00e9\u00e9 un \u00ab\u00a0superminimum\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finalement, quelle que soit l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se retenue, la baisse d&rsquo;\u00e9clat de B\u00e9telgeuse observ\u00e9e fin 2019 \u00e9tait incontestablement impressionnante et inhabituelle.
