Ce \u201cgrand fr\u00e8re\u201d d\u2019Hubble est le plus grand t\u00e9lescope astronomique jamais envoy\u00e9 dans l\u2019espace. L&rsquo;agence spatiale am\u00e9ricaine (Nasa) imagine d\u00e9j\u00e0 son futur t\u00e9lescope spatial capable d&rsquo;observer dans le proche infrarouge avec une performance in\u00e9gal\u00e9e. D&rsquo;abord baptis\u00e9 Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST), l&rsquo;instrument aurait la capacit\u00e9 d&rsquo;\u00e9tudier les corps c\u00e9lestes tr\u00e8s faiblement lumineux, afin de mieux comprendre les processus de formation des galaxies, des \u00e9toiles, des plan\u00e8tes et de la vie, seulement quelques centaines de millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/la-theorie-du-big-bang\/\">Big Bang<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un objectif ambitieux, qui n\u00e9cessite de nombreuses ann\u00e9es de d\u00e9veloppement et recherches de financements. \u00c0 la fin des ann\u00e9es&nbsp;1990, les premiers travaux de d\u00e9finition de la structure du t\u00e9lescope ont lieu, et la Nasa d\u00e9cide de s\u2019associer aux agences spatiales europ\u00e9enne (Esa) et canadienne (ASC) dans le projet. \u00c0 ce moment, compte tenu du temps estim\u00e9 pour la fabrication des miroirs, le lancement du NGST est pr\u00e9vu au plus t\u00f4t en 2008.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"651\" height=\"412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Space_Telescope_Science_Institute_JPG_credit_Nasa.jpg\" alt=\"Devanture du Space Telescope Science Institute \u00e0 Baltimore, dans le Maryland, o\u00f9 est n\u00e9e l'id\u00e9e du JWST. Au fil des ann\u00e9es, le co\u00fbt du super t\u00e9lescope est r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement revu \u00e0 la hausse, tant et si bien que l\u2019abandon du projet est envisag\u00e9 en&nbsp;2011 par le Congr\u00e8s am\u00e9ricain&#8230; Heureusement, apr\u00e8s des ann\u00e9es d\u2019incertitude, de travail acharn\u00e9 et une bonne douzaine de reports, le tr\u00e8s attendu d\u00e9collage de l&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-grands-observatoires-spatiaux\/\">observatoire spatial<\/a> &#8211;&nbsp;dont le co\u00fbt final fr\u00f4le les dix&nbsp;milliards de dollars&nbsp;&#8211; a bien eu lieu le 25&nbsp;d\u00e9cembre&nbsp;2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Structure du t\u00e9lescope <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avec un tr\u00e8s grand diam\u00e8tre de 6,5&nbsp;m\u00e8tres, ce t\u00e9lescope affiche des dimensions monumentales de 22&#215;12&nbsp;m\u00e8tres pour une masse de 6,5&nbsp;tonnes. Ce mastodonte du ciel va effectuer des observations dans la bande spectrale situ\u00e9e entre 0,6&nbsp;et 28&nbsp;microm\u00e8tres, qui correspond au rayonnement infrarouge. De cette fa\u00e7on, le Soleil, la Terre et la Lune seront constamment derri\u00e8re le bouclier thermique, de sorte que le t\u00e9lescope et ses instruments seront bien prot\u00e9g\u00e9s, dans le froid et dans le noir. Au vu de la taille et de la forme du \u201cpare-soleil\u201d g\u00e9ant, la zone du ciel observable \u00e0 un instant donn\u00e9 par le t\u00e9lescope sera d\u2019environ 40&nbsp;% de la vo\u00fbte c\u00e9leste &#8211;&nbsp;contre 80&nbsp;% pour Hubble. L\u2019observation de l&rsquo;ensemble du ciel sera toutefois bel et bien possible au cours de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, sur une p\u00e9riode de 100&nbsp;jours minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Premi\u00e8res images en 2022<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apr\u00e8s son lancement depuis le centre spatial de Kourou en Guyane, \u201cpli\u00e9\u201d dans la coiffe d\u2019une fus\u00e9e Ariane\u00a05, le JWST est entr\u00e9 dans une phase de test d\u2019environ six mois avant de fournir ses premi\u00e8res images au printemps\u00a02022. Les premiers r\u00e9sultats scientifiques sont eux attendus pour le mois de juillet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le super t\u00e9lescope poss\u00e8de une dur\u00e9e de vie nominale de 5,5\u00a0ans, mais doit emporter suffisamment de carburant pour se maintenir sur son orbite pendant au moins dix ann\u00e9es. Menzel\/Sophia Roberts\/AIMM<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une fois op\u00e9rationnel, le James Webb Space Telescope surpassera d\u2019un facteur&nbsp;10 \u00e0&nbsp;100 tous les <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-grands-observatoires-terrestres\/\">observatoires terrestres<\/a> fonctionnant actuellement dans l&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/sciences\/definitions\/physique-infrarouge-1011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infrarouge<\/a>. L&rsquo;instrument repr\u00e9sente ainsi un v\u00e9ritable bond en avant pour l&rsquo;astronomie, et devrait mener \u00e0 des d\u00e9couvertes dans toutes les sous-disciplines de l\u2019astrophysique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00ab\u00a0Voir\u00a0\u00bb les premiers objets de l\u2019Univers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour la toute premi\u00e8re fois, l\u2019observatoire spatial va nous permettre de \u00ab\u00a0voir\u00a0\u00bb les premiers objets de l\u2019Univers, seulement une centaine de millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es apr\u00e8s leur formation. L\u2019un des objectifs scientifiques du super t\u00e9lescope concerne notamment l\u2019origine des galaxies. Le JWST doit confirmer ou infirmer aux astrophysiciens l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se selon laquelle toutes les galaxies g\u00e9antes ont subi au moins une fusion majeure avec une autre galaxie, quand l&rsquo;Univers \u00e9tait \u00e2g\u00e9 d\u2019environ six milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es.
