Leurs grandes s\u0153urs les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites, font aussi le show dans le ciel mais surtout, elles atteignent la surface de la Terre. La poussi\u00e8re se d\u00e9sagr\u00e8ge compl\u00e8tement, en quelques secondes \u00e0 peine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bien que tout m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde perde de la mati\u00e8re lors de sa travers\u00e9e de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, tous ne se vaporisent pas. Une partie des gros corps c\u00e9lestes qui croisent la route de notre plan\u00e8te finit sa course sur le sol terrestre, devenant ainsi <strong>m\u00e9t\u00e9orite<\/strong>. En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, le r\u00e9sidu parvenant \u00e0 atterrir repr\u00e9sente entre un centi\u00e8me et un milli\u00e8me de la roche initiale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 noter que la tra\u00een\u00e9e lumineuse cr\u00e9\u00e9e par la chute d&rsquo;un m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re est appel\u00e9e <strong>m\u00e9t\u00e9ore<\/strong>. Chaque ann\u00e9e, 1500 m\u00e9t\u00e9orites suppl\u00e9mentaires sont d\u00e9couvertes et s&rsquo;ajoutent \u00e0 ce total, dont 1400 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&rsquo;observation de leur m\u00e9t\u00e9ore.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&rsquo;immense majorit\u00e9 &#8211; 99,8 % ! &#8211; des m\u00e9t\u00e9orites ramass\u00e9es sur Terre correspond \u00e0 des fragments d\u2019ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes. Souvent, ces fragments proviennent de la collision de deux <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/formation-du-systeme-solaire\/\">astres de la ceinture principale<\/a> entre Mars et Jupiter, un des deux principaux r\u00e9servoirs \u00e0 petits corps du Syst\u00e8me solaire avec la ceinture de Kuiper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La plus grosse m\u00e9t\u00e9orite du monde a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9valu\u00e9e \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 70 tonnes \u00e0 son arriv\u00e9e sur Terre. Appel\u00e9e m\u00e9t\u00e9orite de Hoba, elle est le plus gros bloc naturel de&nbsp;fer&nbsp;connu sur notre plan\u00e8te. Depuis sa chute en Namibie il y a environ 80 000 ans, \u00e9rosion, pr\u00e9l\u00e8vements scientifiques mais aussi actes de vandalisme ont r\u00e9duit sa masse \u00e0 60 tonnes (tout de m\u00eame !). <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"511\" height=\"324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Hoba_meteorite_credit_CC_BY-SA_2.0.jpg\" alt=\"Photo prise par un touriste en 2014 de la plus grosse m\u00e9t\u00e9orite du monde. Certaines r\u00e9sultent en effet de l&rsquo;impact entre un ast\u00e9ro\u00efde&#8230; et <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/la-lune-notre-satellite-naturel\/\">la Lune<\/a>, ou m\u00eame <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/que-sait-on-de-mars\/\">Mars<\/a> ! Apr\u00e8s une collision avec la surface de notre satellite naturel ou de la plan\u00e8te rouge, des fragments de roche de ces derniers peuvent \u00eatre \u00e9ject\u00e9s dans l&rsquo;espace. Si le choc est suffisamment puissant, ces cailloux \u00e9chappent alors \u00e0 l&rsquo;attraction gravitationnelle de leur&nbsp;corps parents pour venir croiser l&rsquo;orbite de la Terre par la suite. Ce transfert peut d&rsquo;ailleurs prendre jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 plusieurs millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La premi\u00e8re m\u00e9t\u00e9orite lunaire, Allan Hills A81005, a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couverte en 1982 lors d&rsquo;une exp\u00e9dition en&nbsp;Antarctique. \u00c0 ce jour, on en recense plus de 160.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"221\" height=\"211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Allan_Hills_81005_lunar_meteorite_credit_Nasa.jpg\" alt=\"Photo de la premi\u00e8re m\u00e9t\u00e9orite lunaire d\u00e9couverte : sur fond blanc, c'est un caillou aux couleurs marron, qu'on dirait cass\u00e9, avec des touches de blanc.\" class=\"wp-image-6742\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Premi\u00e8re m\u00e9t\u00e9orite lunaire d\u00e9couverte en 1982.<\/strong><small> Cr\u00e9dit : Nasa <\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites martiennes sont aussi tr\u00e8s peu nombreuses, seulement entre 120 et 150 environ. En outre, il existe un type de roche encore plus rare : les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites en provenance de Mercure. Une roche d\u00e9couverte en 2012 au Maroc a \u00e9t\u00e9 soup\u00e7onn\u00e9e d&rsquo;\u00eatre la premi\u00e8re jamais rep\u00e9r\u00e9e. Elle ne comporte en effet aucune trace de fer, point commun avec la surface de Mercure quasiment d\u00e9pourvue de ce m\u00e9tal. La gravit\u00e9 y est si forte qu&rsquo;un morceau de la plan\u00e8te issu d&rsquo;un impact ne pourrait pas s&rsquo;en \u00e9chapper. Enfin, la gravit\u00e9 de Jupiter nous emp\u00eache de recevoir des fragments en provenance de ses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/jupiter-les-dernieres-decouvertes\/\">satellites rocheux (Io, Europe, Ganym\u00e8de et Callisto)<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, certaines m\u00e9t\u00e9orites pourraient \u00eatre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/comprendre-les-cometes\/\">issues de noyaux de com\u00e8tes<\/a>, comme plusieurs scientifiques l&rsquo;affirment pour la&nbsp;m\u00e9t\u00e9orite d&rsquo;Orgueil. On y a m\u00eame d\u00e9cel\u00e9 des traces d&rsquo;acides amin\u00e9s, les \u00ab\u00a0briques \u00e9l\u00e9mentaires\u00a0\u00bb de la vie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La m\u00e9t\u00e9orite d&rsquo;Orgueil et les chondrites sont ainsi de pr\u00e9cieux indices pour la compr\u00e9hension des processus de formation du Syst\u00e8me solaire et de l&rsquo;apparition de la vie sur Terre. L&rsquo;analyse de certaines a m\u00eame r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 la pr\u00e9sence de mati\u00e8re datant <em>d\u2019avant<\/em> l\u2019apparition du Soleil&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">O\u00f9 trouver une m\u00e9t\u00e9orite ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Statistiquement, entre 2000 et&nbsp;5000&nbsp;m\u00e9t\u00e9orites&nbsp;de plus d\u2019un kilogramme atterrissent sur notre plan\u00e8te chaque ann\u00e9e. Plus des deux tiers se perdent, notamment dans les oc\u00e9ans qui recouvrent pr\u00e8s de 71 % de la surface terrestre. Mais restons positifs, la chasse aux m\u00e9t\u00e9orites n&rsquo;est pas mission impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tout d&rsquo;abord, il faut s\u00e9lectionner des terrains nus et homog\u00e8nes, o\u00f9 un caillou isol\u00e9 tomb\u00e9 du ciel &#8211; et encore non recouvert de sable ou de neige &#8211; se rep\u00e8re facilement : d\u00e9sert, banquise, lac ass\u00e9ch\u00e9&#8230; Les climats humides provoquent une d\u00e9composition rapide des m\u00e9t\u00e9orites, donc les endroits secs sont conseill\u00e9s. Cette esp\u00e8ce min\u00e9rale est contenue dans tous les granites, roches qui forment l&rsquo;essentiel de la cro\u00fbte terrestre et donc pr\u00e9sentes un peu partout. Les&nbsp;quartz \u00ab\u00a0choqu\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb sont des marqueurs de la pr\u00e9sence d&rsquo;un crat\u00e8re de m\u00e9t\u00e9orite, aucun autre choc naturel ne pouvant justifier leur pr\u00e9sence. En traversant l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites s&rsquo;\u00e9chauffent et se vaporisent partiellement, d&rsquo;o\u00f9 la pr\u00e9sence d&rsquo;une cro\u00fbte&nbsp;de&nbsp;fusion de quelques millim\u00e8tres d&rsquo;\u00e9paisseur \u00e0 leur surface. L&rsquo;\u00e9tude de la composition chimique des m\u00e9t\u00e9orites ramass\u00e9es sur Terre permet de les diviser en trois familles : les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites pierreuses (92,8 %), mixtes (5,7 %) et ferreuses (1,5 %). Les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites pierreuses, appel\u00e9es litho\u00efdes (chondrites \u00e0 85,7 % et achondrites \u00e0 7,1 %), ont une densit\u00e9 environ deux fois moins importante que celle des roches terrestres. De plus, compos\u00e9es essentiellement de fer, les sid\u00e9rites contiennent entre 20 et 100 fois plus de nickel, platine et iridium qu&rsquo;une pierre quelconque. Une composition caract\u00e9ristique. Un simple aimant au bout d&rsquo;un b\u00e2ton ou un d\u00e9tecteur de m\u00e9taux plus sophistiqu\u00e9 permet ainsi de rep\u00e9rer une potentielle m\u00e9t\u00e9orite ferreuse parmi d&rsquo;autres roches, avant v\u00e9rification au microscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, si la m\u00e9t\u00e9orite a \u00e9t\u00e9 bris\u00e9e, il est possible d&rsquo;observer de petits grains m\u00e9talliques, ou si c&rsquo;est une chondrite, de minuscules billes compos\u00e9es majoritairement de&nbsp;silicate et appel\u00e9es chondres. Dans leur jargon, ils distinguent les \u00ab\u00a0chutes\u00a0\u00bb qui correspondent aux m\u00e9t\u00e9orites d\u00e9couvertes apr\u00e8s observation de leur m\u00e9t\u00e9ore, et les \u00ab\u00a0trouvailles\u00a0\u00bb, roches qui ont pu atterrir il y a des ann\u00e9es.
