Mais ce n&rsquo;est pas une \u00e9toile. Cet objet n\u2019a en fait rien \u00e0 voir avec les <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-etoiles-naissance-vie-et-mort\/\">corps c\u00e9lestes en fusion<\/a> \u00e0 des millions de kilom\u00e8tres de la Terre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Souvent de la taille d\u2019un grain de riz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Une \u00e9toile filante appara\u00eet lorsqu&rsquo;un petit corps appel\u00e9 m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde, dont la taille va de quelques dixi\u00e8mes de millim\u00e8tre \u00e0 quelques m\u00e8tres, croise l\u2019orbite de notre plan\u00e8te. En p\u00e9n\u00e9trant dans la haute atmosph\u00e8re terrestre, le m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde, souvent de la taille d\u2019un grain de riz, induit un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne lumineux que nous appelons commun\u00e9ment \u00e9toile filante.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efdes p\u00e9n\u00e8trent dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re avec une vitesse de l&rsquo;ordre de 10&nbsp;\u00e0&nbsp;70&nbsp;km\/s. Cette vitesse dite \u201ccosmique\u201d correspond \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence entre la vitesse de d\u00e9placement du m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde et celle de la Terre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 cette allure, entre 85&nbsp;et 120&nbsp;kilom\u00e8tres d&rsquo;altitude, le petit corps frotte contre les mol\u00e9cules d\u2019air de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re et arrache des \u00e9lectrons aux atomes de ces mol\u00e9cules&nbsp;: c\u2019est ce qu\u2019on appelle l\u2019ionisation de l\u2019air. Dans le m\u00eame temps, la compression de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re en avant du petit corps provoque un \u00e9chauffement. Le m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde laisse alors derri\u00e8re lui un sillage de gaz tr\u00e8s chaud, ionis\u00e9 et lumineux&nbsp;: le plasma. On observe alors dans le ciel l\u2019apparition d\u2019une tra\u00een\u00e9e lumineuse \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00c9toile filante ou bolide&nbsp;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette tra\u00een\u00e9e lumineuse est appel\u00e9e m\u00e9t\u00e9ore. Il n\u2019atteint pas le sol&nbsp;: il s\u2019agit alors d\u2019une \u00e9toile filante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais lorsque le m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde est plus gros, il produit dans le ciel une tra\u00een\u00e9e lumineuse intense et de relativement longue dur\u00e9e. Ils ne se d\u00e9sint\u00e8gre pas compl\u00e8tement, et les derniers fragments retombent en chute libre \u00e0 partir de 50&nbsp;kilom\u00e8tres d\u2019altitude jusqu\u2019au sol, sous forme d\u2019une ou plusieurs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-meteorites\/\">m\u00e9t\u00e9orites<\/a>. Dans ce cas, le m\u00e9t\u00e9ore est appel\u00e9 bolide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">D\u2019o\u00f9 viennent les m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efdes&nbsp;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>L&rsquo;orbite de la Terre croise souvent la trajectoire de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/comprendre-les-cometes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">com\u00e8tes<\/a> ou d\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-asteroides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes<\/a>. Or, ces corps, et notamment les com\u00e8tes, laissent des r\u00e9sidus sur leur passage. Ainsi, \u00e0 l\u2019approche du Soleil, le noyau des com\u00e8tes fait de glaces et de poussi\u00e8res se sublime&nbsp;: il lib\u00e8re gaz et particules qui forment une chevelure. Ces particules ne suivent pas leur \u201ccom\u00e8te m\u00e8re\u201d ind\u00e9finiment, mais restent en suspension dans l\u2019espace. Ce sont ces filons de poussi\u00e8re com\u00e9taire, ou parfois de poussi\u00e8re d\u2019ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes et appel\u00e9s essaims m\u00e9t\u00e9oritiques, que la Terre croise et qui cr\u00e9ent les \u00e9toiles filantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puisque les essaims m\u00e9t\u00e9oritiques sont constitu\u00e9s de nombreuses poussi\u00e8res, ils sont \u00e0 l\u2019origine de v\u00e9ritables pluies d\u2019\u00e9toiles filantes. Les m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efdes issus d\u2019un m\u00eame essaim entrent tous dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re \u00e0 la m\u00eame vitesse. De plus, puisque les essaims sont situ\u00e9s \u00e0 des endroits bien pr\u00e9cis de l\u2019orbite terrestre, la Terre les traverse chaque ann\u00e9e \u00e0 la m\u00eame p\u00e9riode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ainsi, les pluies d\u2019\u00e9toiles filantes qui peuvent durer entre plusieurs heures et plusieurs semaines sont de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/des-etoiles-filantes-toute-lannee\/\">grands rendez-vous annuels<\/a> pour les astronomes amateurs. Il existe pr\u00e8s de 70&nbsp;essaims m\u00e9t\u00e9oritiques \u00e0 l\u2019origine d\u2019environ 70&nbsp;pluies d\u2019\u00e9toiles filantes tout au long de l\u2019ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Autour du 12&nbsp;ao\u00fbt, la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/les-etoiles-filantes-des-perseides\/\">pluie des Pers\u00e9ides<\/a> est sans doute la plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre. En novembre, ce sont <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/observez-les-etoiles-filantes-des-leonides\/\">les L\u00e9onides<\/a> qui peuvent donner lieu \u00e0 des m\u00e9t\u00e9ores tr\u00e8s intenses. On citera aussi les Orionides, constitu\u00e9es de m\u00e9t\u00e9ores issus des d\u00e9bris de la com\u00e8te de Halley et visibles entre le 2&nbsp;octobre et le 7&nbsp;novembre, ou encore les \u00eata&nbsp;Aquarides du 19&nbsp;avril au 28&nbsp;mai, \u00e9galement issues de la com\u00e8te de Halley.&nbsp;Les Quadrantides (1<sup>er<\/sup>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;5&nbsp;janvier), les Lyrides (15&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;28&nbsp;avril), les G\u00e9minides (7&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;17&nbsp;d\u00e9cembre) et les Ursides (17&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;26&nbsp;d\u00e9cembre) font \u00e9galement partie des principales observables. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 plusieurs dizaines de milliers par heure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Par un effet de perspective lors de ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements, les \u00e9toiles filantes semblent toutes provenir du m\u00eame point du ciel. On appelle ce point imaginaire le radiant. Les Pers\u00e9ides s\u2019appellent donc ainsi car le radiant de l\u2019essaim m\u00e9t\u00e9oritique correspondant se trouve dans la constellation de Pers\u00e9e. Quand on compte plusieurs dizaines de milliers de m\u00e9t\u00e9ores par heure, on parle de temp\u00eate d&rsquo;\u00e9toiles filantes.&nbsp;\u00c0 noter que certaines \u00e9toiles filantes ne semblent pas provenir du radiant. Elles sont appel\u00e9es \u00ab\u00a0sporadiques\u00a0\u00bb et correspondent \u00e0 des grains de poussi\u00e8re qui n&rsquo;appartiennent pas \u00e0 l&rsquo;essaim travers\u00e9. D\u2019apr\u00e8s les calculs des scientifiques et outre les essaims annuels, il serait possible d&rsquo;observer en moyenne une \u00e9toile filante par heure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Par ailleurs, d&rsquo;une ann\u00e9e sur l\u2019autre, les pluies d\u2019\u00e9toiles filantes annuelles peuvent \u00eatre plus ou moins spectaculaires. En effet, le courant de poussi\u00e8res peut \u00eatre plus ou moins dense, notamment s\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment r\u00e9aliment\u00e9 par un nouveau passage de la com\u00e8te d\u2019origine. Pour rappel, les com\u00e8tes ont toutes des trajectoires elliptiques autour du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/observer-le-soleil\/\">Soleil<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enfin, on peut souligner que le spectacle est \u00e9galement d\u00e9pendant des conditions d\u2019observation et de la clart\u00e9 du ciel.
