Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019une infime partie de l\u2019Univers observable<\/strong>. <small>Photo : NASA \/ ESA \/ CSA \/ STScI.<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La mesure des distances des \u00e9toiles voisines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Les \u00e9toiles qui nous sont famili\u00e8res sont pour la plupart situ\u00e9es \u00e0 moins d\u2019une centaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re, ce qui est plut\u00f4t proche aux <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/ou-sommes-nous-dans-lunivers\/\">\u00e9chelles cosmiques<\/a>. Comment le sait-on ? En les observant depuis la Terre \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents moments de l\u2019ann\u00e9e : par rapport \u00e0 d\u2019autres \u00e9toiles plus lointaines, elles montrent de petits changements de position en raison d\u2019un d\u00e9calage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/distances-tailles-dans-ciel-degres-minutes-secondes\/\">d\u2019angle de vue<\/a> appel\u00e9 <em><strong>parallaxe<\/strong><\/em>. Ce d\u00e9calage permet de calculer une distance par une simple formule de g\u00e9om\u00e9trie. Il existe des \u00e9toiles d\u2019un type particulier, les <strong>C\u00e9ph\u00e9ides<\/strong>, dont l\u2019\u00e9clat varie avec une grande r\u00e9gularit\u00e9 : elles \u00ab clignotent \u00bb \u00e0 un rythme proportionnel \u00e0 leur luminosit\u00e9 propre. En mesurant ce rythme ainsi que la luminosit\u00e9 moyenne de l\u2019\u00e9toile per\u00e7ue depuis la Terre \u2013 dont on sait qu\u2019elle est att\u00e9nu\u00e9e en fonction de la distance \u2013 on peut calculer son \u00e9loignement. On peut ainsi mesurer la distance des galaxies les plus proches, \u00e0 quelques millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re, d\u00e8s lors qu\u2019elles abritent des C\u00e9ph\u00e9ides. Mais en analysant la lumi\u00e8re qu\u2019elles \u00e9mettent, on peut utiliser un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne appel\u00e9 <em><strong>d\u00e9calage vers le rouge<\/strong><\/em> pour remonter \u00e0 leur distance. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne correspond \u00e0 une dilatation des ondes lumineuses, le rouge ayant une longueur d\u2019onde plus grande que celle des autres couleurs de l\u2019arc-en-ciel. Pourquoi cette dilatation ? \u00c0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1920, les astronomes Georges Lema\u00eetre et Edwin Hubble ont apport\u00e9 la r\u00e9ponse : <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/la-theorie-du-big-bang\/\">l\u2019Univers est en expansion<\/a>, et les galaxies s\u2019\u00e9loignent les unes des autres \u00e0 une vitesse proportionnelle \u00e0 leur distance. On peut donc conna\u00eetre la distance d\u2019une galaxie en mesurant sa vitesse d\u2019\u00e9loignement, caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par son d\u00e9calage vers le rouge. C\u2019est la clef pour sonder les grandes profondeurs de l\u2019Univers. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 certaines limites\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L&rsquo;Univers : fini ou infini ?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Selon la th\u00e9orie du Big bang, l\u2019expansion de l\u2019Univers a commenc\u00e9 il y a 14 milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es, \u00e0 partir d\u2019un \u00e9tat primordial extr\u00eamement dense et chaud. Aucune lumi\u00e8re ne peut avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9mise avant, si bien qu\u2019on ne peut observer aucun objet dont la lumi\u00e8re aurait mis plus de 14 milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es \u00e0 nous parvenir. Il y a donc une limite \u00e0 ce que les scientifiques appellent <em><strong>l\u2019Univers observable<\/strong><\/em>. Compte tenu de son expansion pendant cette dur\u00e9e maximale, on estime que l\u2019Univers observable occupe une sph\u00e8re d\u2019une cinquantaine de milliards d\u2019ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re de rayon. Mais une partie de l\u2019Univers pourrait \u00eatre plus lointaine encore, et demeurer inaccessible \u00e0 l\u2019observation en raison de la vitesse limit\u00e9e de la lumi\u00e8re. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alors, jusqu\u2019o\u00f9 l\u2019Univers s\u2019\u00e9tend-il ? La question n\u2019est pas tranch\u00e9e \u00e0 ce jour : si certains scientifiques sont convaincus que l\u2019Univers est infini, d\u2019autres consid\u00e8rent que l\u2019espace est peut-\u00eatre courb\u00e9, se refermant sur lui-m\u00eame comme une sph\u00e8re : un Univers fini, sans bords. Qu\u2019y aurait-\u00adil \u00ab autour \u00bb ? Rien, pas m\u00eame de vide ni d\u2019espace !
