Lorsque <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stelvision.com\/astro\/la-lune-notre-satellite-naturel\/\">la Lune<\/a> a l\u2019aspect d\u2019un croissant, sa zone non \u00e9clair\u00e9e n\u2019est pas totalement noire mais d\u2019un gris plus ou moins clair. C\u2019est la <em>lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Quelle est l\u2019origine de la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e&nbsp;?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>La lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e de la Lune est le fruit d\u2019une double r\u00e9flexion de la lumi\u00e8re du Soleil<\/strong>. Les rayons lumineux de notre \u00e9toile se refl\u00e8tent d\u2019abord sur la Terre, qui en renvoie une partie vers la Lune. Une partie de ces rayons r\u00e9fl\u00e9chis sont alors renvoy\u00e9s par la face sombre de la Lune en direction de la Terre. Mais comme la Terre est plus grosse que la Lune, le clair de Terre est bien plus lumineux&nbsp;! Mais compte tenu de son faible \u00e9clat, on ne la per\u00e7oit visuellement que si sa surface est plus grande ou \u00e9gale \u00e0 la surface \u00e9clair\u00e9e. <\/strong>On peut donc l&rsquo;observer d\u00e8s que la Lune est en fin croissant apr\u00e8s la nouvelle lune et jusqu\u2019au premier quartier (positions 2, 3 et&nbsp;4 ci-dessous). Mais aussi parce que le clair de Terre est d&rsquo;autant plus grand que le croissant de Lune est fin. La num\u00e9rotation correspond aux positions Terre-Lune dans l&rsquo;illustration pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente. <\/strong><small>Cliquez pour agrandir.<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Au final, il faut retenir que c&rsquo;est du deuxi\u00e8me au cinqui\u00e8me jour et du vingt-cinqui\u00e8me au vingt-huiti\u00e8me jour du cycle lunaire que la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e est la plus spectaculaire, lorsque la Lune est en fin croissant.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quelles sont les meilleures conditions pour observer la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e&nbsp;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e est plus ais\u00e9ment observable lorsque le cr\u00e9puscule ou l\u2019aurore sont courts. Aux latitudes de la France m\u00e9tropolitaine, elle s\u2019observe donc mieux au printemps et \u00e0 l\u2019automne. Pr\u00e8s de l\u2019\u00e9quateur en revanche, les cr\u00e9puscules \u00e9tant brefs toute l\u2019ann\u00e9e, la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e se rep\u00e8re facilement tout au long de l&rsquo;ann\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u00f4t\u00e9 m\u00e9t\u00e9o, les plus belles lumi\u00e8res cendr\u00e9es sont visibles lorsque l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re est bien transparente (ciel lav\u00e9 par une pluie, aucun voile de nuages). Aux instruments, cette observation est encore plus fascinante&nbsp;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faits et anecdotes au sujet de la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9clat de la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e varie en fonction de plusieurs facteurs&nbsp;:<br>&#8211;&nbsp;la surface du clair de Terre&nbsp;;<br>&#8211;&nbsp;la nature du clair de Terre (les terres renvoient plus de lumi\u00e8re que les oc\u00e9ans)&nbsp;;<br>&#8211;&nbsp;la quantit\u00e9 de nuages ou de neige sur le clair de Terre (le blanc a un tr\u00e8s fort pouvoir r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissant).<br>Dans une moindre mesure, la zone o\u00f9 se trouve la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e sur la Lune (le quartier gauche est plus sombre que le quartier droit) et la distance Terre-Lune ont aussi une influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"boxFocus color1\">La lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e brille entre 5&nbsp;800 et 33&nbsp;200 fois moins que la pleine lune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les anglophones utilisent l&rsquo;expression <em>la vieille lune est dans les bras de la nouvelle lune<\/em> pour d\u00e9signer la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e du soir qui se niche dans le fin croissant. Et tr\u00e8s logiquement, ils parlent de <em>la nouvelle lune dans les bras de la vieille lune<\/em> pour d\u00e9signer la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e visible le matin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group boxFocus color1 has-white-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Pour la petite histoire&#8230;<\/strong><br>C\u2019est L\u00e9onard de Vinci qui a eu le premier la bonne intuition pour expliquer l\u2019origine de la lumi\u00e8re cendr\u00e9e, au d\u00e9but du 16<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle. Il explique sa th\u00e9orie mettant en cause la lumi\u00e8re du Soleil dans le <em>Codex Leicester<\/em> (du nom de son acqu\u00e9reur le Comte de Leicester qui en fit l\u2019acquisition en 1717). Mais l\u2019explication propos\u00e9e n\u2019est que partiellement exacte, car le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre italien croyait que la lumi\u00e8re solaire est r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie par des oc\u00e9ans pr\u00e9sents \u00e0 la surface de la Lune.
